Empowering Youth & Families Program

The Empowering Youth and Families Program (EYFP) is currently enrolling families through the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Carteret County Center. Both the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Carteret County Center and the Carteret County Health Department are excited to partner in this program, which will begin in September, 2018. It is a twelve-week series in which Strengthening Families Program 10-14 (SFP 10-14) is complemented by lessons developed by NC State University Extension on opioid prevention. At the conclusion of the twelve weekly sessions, the Carteret County families will join with families from other counties in a weekend retreat to enjoy fun family time and work together as a county group to develop and implement an action plan to help reduce opioid misuse in Carteret County.

Families in Yancey and Montgomery counties completed EYFP in the spring of this year, and families reported improved communication skills, the use of new techniques to address negative behaviors from their children, and an increased understanding of risk factors for adverse behaviors. Families in those counties are currently planning their community action events, which will take place in the next several months. To explore joining the Empowering Youth and Families Program in Carteret County, please contact Director, Shawn Banks, 252-222-6352 or shawn_banks@ncsu.edu.
