Interested in gardening? Learn about sustainable, science-based gardening practices from the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service.

Extension Master Gardener℠ training classes are a series of FREE lectures and hands-on workshops for home and community gardeners about how to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs and more. Using the latest research in applied horticultural science from NC State Extension and other land grant institutions, participants will learn how to grow food sustainably and learn how to incorporate native plants into their landscape to support beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife.

Classes emphasize environmentally-friendly practices, including improving soil health, reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides, protecting water quality, increasing landscape biodiversity, and other goals.

Classes are offered each week for a period of seven weeks. Participants will have access to online printed resources from NC State Extension.

Classes are taught by Horticulture Agent Shannon Newton with support from the Master Gardener℠ volunteers (MGVs) of Hoke County. Shannon has been a horticultural professional for many years with both hands on and classroom experience. The Hoke EMGs are passionate gardeners from diverse backgrounds who have been trained by N.C. Cooperative Extension staff to help Hoke County residents with their gardening challenges.

While information is research-based, the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service exists to specifically transfer knowledge to the citizens of North Carolina in a manner that is practical and easy to understand.

Classes are taught at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Hoke County Center (116 W Prospect Ave, Raeford, NC)
