Part of the resistance management program is to aim for 100% weed-free fields just prior to planting. However, even when cultivation or herbicide applications are made prior to planting, many factors may delay planting allowing weeds to emerge. Thus, inclusion of a paraquat application behind the planter is advised to control any newly emerged weeds. Beginning in 2019, users of paraquat are required to obtain training. The EPA now requires that applicators as well as those mixing or handling paraquat-containing pesticides to be a certified applicator that has completed a paraquat-specific training program. The training is only available online at  www.usparaquattraining.com.

The process should take about 30-45 minutes. Simply register, fill out the contact information and begin the quiz. First time registrants will need to verify registration via an instant email link sent to the provided email address. (If the web link redirects you from the paraquat training page, simply type in “paraquat” in the search box and this should take you back to the training module). When finished, print the certificate of completion provided and keep this with pesticide records.

Only new products should have this new label. Older products that do not have this requirement  may still be used without the training. However, most companies will have these new requirements soon, if not already. So, check the label prior to application.
