The end of March marks the start of spring and the beginning of spring cleaning. If you have piles of products you are not sure how to dispose of, Currituck County has the event for you. On March 28, 2020, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center and Currituck Public Works team will hold a household hazardous waste disposal day to help assist in this year’s spring cleaning. All of those old paint cans that have been lying in the corner of the garage, the old sticky pesticide containers on the shelf in the shed, and the old batteries rolling around in the drawer can be disposed of along with much more.

The Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day will be held at two different locations and two different times in Currituck. The first location is at the Judicial Center Complex, 2801 Caratoke Hwy, Currituck, NC from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second location is at the Southern Outer Banks Water Plant, 734 Ocean Trail, Corolla, NC from 9 a.m. to noon. These events will be held rain or shine so there is no excuse to hold onto those household hazardous waste another year!

Items that can be disposed of include: aerosols, antifreeze and other automotive fluids, household batteries, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, cleaners, pool chemicals, fertilizers, weed and feed, pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, oil-based paints, paint thinners and solvents, wood filler, adhesives, caulk, mercury, thermostats and debris, and fluorescent light tubes.

For more information on the household hazardous waste disposal day: what types of waste can be disposed of, information on the collection sites or times, or any other hazardous waste-related questions, email or call Adam Formella at Adam_Formella@ncsu.edu or 252-232-2262.
