On April 24, 2021, over eighty volunteers took to the highways and byways of Pamlico County to offer their time and service to help collect roadside litter during the Pamlico County Clean Sweep event. These volunteers included local community and religious organizations, concerned and highly motivated citizens, local county government employees, NC DOT personnel, staff from the Town of Bayboro, and the Sheriff’s office who offered support to protect our volunteers in high traffic locations. The Pamlico County Clean Sweep Committee sincerely appreciates the hard work by these volunteers and would like to thank them for a job well done.man picking up trash on side of road

Together these volunteers collected approximately 250 bags of roadside litter, averaging between 5-10 pounds per bag, along with additional items like tires and discarded equipment. Trends among reported litter items revealed that beverage containers (plastic, glass, metal) and cigarette butts made up the majority of litter along our highways. With cigarette butts taking several years to decompose and items like plastic bottles taking several hundred years, roadside litter is an ever-present problem that detracts from the beauty of our local landscapes and poses risks to our environment.

Events like Clean Sweep help to remind our citizens that roadside litter is an issue that can only be managed with the collective effort from all our communities. Pamlico County is planning a second Clean Sweep event on October 2, 2021. If you would like to volunteer for this event, you can contact Gary Cooper with Pamlico Recycling at 252-745-2094 or Daniel Simpson with N.C. Cooperative Extension of Pamlico County at 252-745-4121. Please help us Keep Pamlico Beautiful!
