Healthy Living in North Carolina

Our 4-H pledge asks us to strive towards a healthier life for our clubs, community, country, and world. North Carolina healthy living programs help youth learn quality life skills that lead to a healthy and balanced life. The physical, mental, and emotional health of youth is our top priority. Focus areas for North Carolina 4-H Programs include decision making, goal-setting, social skills, mental health, stress management, and substance use prevention.

4-H Pledge
I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service,
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

Currently, NC 4-H has two main healthy living programs: Health Rocks! and Empowering Youth and Families Program.

Health Rocks! is a 4-H Healthy Living program for young people ages 8 to 14 with the goal of bringing youth, families, and communities together to reduce tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. North Carolina 4-H is proud to be a part of the Health Rocks! program for over ten years.

The middle school years are a critical time for youth and their families. The skills and behaviors that tweens and young teens learn in early adolescence can set them up for a lifetime of success or start them down a dangerous path. North Carolina 4-H’s Empowering Youth and Families Program (EYFP) helps middle school youth and their caregivers choose to thrive.

EYFP families learn how to recognize differences between behavior and emotion, and how to respond appropriately to each. Over 10 weekly sessions, youth, and caregivers:

  • Learn and practice new communication skills based on brain science and youth development research.
  • Learn how to set clear, reasonable expectations and hold each other accountable for meeting them.
  • Network with other local families and local community leaders.
  • Plan, organize, and host a community-wide event to promote healthy living in their home counties.
  • Enjoy having fun, playing games, and bonding!

Participating in your local EYFP cohort prepares the youth in your care for a successful future by growing stronger, healthier, and more resilient family relationships today.
