Rain Sticks

For centuries, people have come up with elaborate ways to welcome much-needed rain. Native American tribes are known for performing rain dances. People in parts of South America are known for shooting arrows at the clouds to pierce them and cause rain to spill.

In many cultures, calling for rain often included the use of musical instruments and one of those is the rain stick. Traditionally they were made from dead cactus tubes, but we are going to show you today how to make a slightly less traditional rain stick, but still fun.

Supplies: Cardboard tube (wrapping paper roll or paper towel roll), rice or beans, notecards, tape, scissors

Optional supplies: tissue paper, glue, paint, markers, etc.

Window Greenhouses

Window Greenhouses are a great way to see what happens when a seed starts to germinate and can easily and quickly be made.

Supplies: A plastic sandwich bag, paper towel or napkin, seeds, water

Optional supplies: Construction paper, markers, or crayons

Get creative, turn that bag into a house, decorate it and show it off! If you don’t have time for decorating, no worries, just simply hang the bag in the window.
