Carteret County Youth participate in 2024 District Activity Day
Many researchers say that the fear of public speaking is one of America's top fears, but not for these youth!
Public speaking is an integral part of North Carolina 4-H. Presentations are one of the most successful ways to help a young person learn how to do a public speech. It focuses on members teaching others what they know about a particular project/subject matter. They are sometimes called demonstrations or illustrated talk or a formal speech. Carteret County 4-H Agent, Coleman Killinger, hosted various presentation workshops to allow youth to choose topics and develop speeches with the support of 4-H staff and peers. Carteret County 4-H also hosted County Activity Day on May 16. During County Activity Day, judges were brought in to evaluate each youth's speech. The youth received feedback which they then use to further develop their speeches in preparation for the district level competition.
District Activity Day was held on Friday, June 14 on the campus of University of Mount Olive. Carteret County 4-H had eight youth who participated.
Walter Stevenson competed in the Cloverbud Category for 5-7 year olds with his presentation "How to Start Grilling." He received a Cloverbud Ribbon for his participation. Walter was a first-time presenter this year.
Carter Becton presented "The Three Branches of Government" in the 8-10 year old Citizenship and Community Service category. He received a Gold medal.
Davin Tucker competed in the 8-10 year old Wheels and Engine category with his presentation, "American Cars vs. Foreign Cars." He received a Silver medal for his presentation. This was Davin's first time presenting at a District Competition.
Ella Hill presented "How to Make Chicken Pot Pie" in the 8-10 year old Foods and Nutrition category. She received a Gold medal.
Isla Espinoza competed in the 8-10 year old Small and Companion Animal Category as a first time presenter with her presentation, "What You Need for Proper Care of a Hamster." She received a Gold Medal. Isla was also a part of 4-H Entertains which provides an opportunity for 4-H'ers to demonstrate their creativity through performing arts.
Lucille Stevenson presented "How to Start Training Your Dog" in the 8-10 year old Small and Companion Animal category. She received a Silver medal. (Not pictured below)
Cate-Hill Binkley competed in the 11-13 year old Health and Fitness category with her presentation, "CPR and Intubation." She received a gold medal.
Bethany Copeland presented "My Journey with Fisheries and Wildlife - Past, Present, and Future" in the 14-18 year old Careers and Entrepreneurship category. Bethany received a Gold Medal. In addition to her presentation, Bethany also performed in 4-H Entertains which gives 4-H'ers the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity through performing arts.
These youth are now eligible to compete at the State Level. The State competition will be held on held on Tuesday, July 23 in Raleigh on the campus of Enloe High School.
