Colorful Fall Flowers Brighten the Day

Mums, pansies and violas seem to be everywhere right now. Mums only bloom for about a week or two and then they are done. However, some of the mums that can be purchased now can be planted in the landscape and will come back from the root system in the spring. Cutting the tips off the stems (called pinching) every couple of weeks will keep the plant bushy. Stop pinching around the first of July so the plant can set flower buds for a spectacular fall display.

Pansies and violas will stay green throughout the winter and bloom almost anytime the temperatures are in the 60’s or above. They provide some delightful color through the colder months and serve as a reminder that even in the cold months, there are flowers to brighten our day. The flowers are also edible and make a nice garnish when dipped in sugar water and left on some waxed paper to dry.
