In this episode of Extension Gardener on the Crystal Coast video series, Shawn Banks takes a look at Yaupon Holly Ilex vomitoria, which is a native plant in our area.

We explore where it grows in the wild, some of its identifying characteristics, and where it can be used in the landscape. This is a very versatile plant with many cultivars including dwarf and weeping that can be selected for different uses in the landscape.

Some features to consider when planting:
  • Due to a high flammability rating do not plant within the defensible space of your home.
  • White flowers in spring produce translucent red berries in fall and winter.
  • Resistant to deer and salt tolerant
  • Wildlife food source
Key terms discussed: Evergreen Tree, Dioecious, & Crenate Margin.
