In this episode of Extension Gardener on the Crystal Coast video series, Shawn Banks takes a look at Yaupon Holly Ilex vomitoria, which is a native plant in our area.
We explore where it grows in the wild, some of its identifying characteristics, and where it can be used in the landscape. This is a very versatile plant with many cultivars including dwarf and weeping that can be selected for different uses in the landscape.
Some features to consider when planting:- Due to a high flammability rating do not plant within the defensible space of your home.
- White flowers in spring produce translucent red berries in fall and winter.
- Resistant to deer and salt tolerant
- Wildlife food source
