It’s not too late to plant a vegetable garden. There are still lots of plants in the garden centers. Look for plants that will do well in the heat of the summer like squash, tomato, pepper, beans, okra and many others. It’s a little late to plant crops that grow better in a spring or fall garden like cabbage, lettuce and root crops.
What you plant in a vegetable garden should be something you like to eat. For example, I am a garden grazer, which means I like to pick it and eat it right there in the garden. I love to plant cherry or grape tomatoes that produce a refreshing splash of flavor when popped into my mouth. I also love the flavor of sweet peppers, cool cucumbers, juicy melons, and crisp string beans. I can’t pick and eat all of those right in the garden, but I have been known to try them on occasion.
A word of advice, if you don’t like to eat it, don’t grow it. I’ve yet to find a good way to cook Brussels sprouts, but my wife loves them. If anybody knows of a good recipe or a variety that isn’t bitter, please let me know.
