Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' (Rose Mallow) is a hybrid cultivar that doesn't fit into any one species. It is the result of breeding several varieties of hibiscus, producing a relatively hardy shrub. It is a deciduous perennial and will survive winter in Zones 5-9 (Carteret County is Zone 8), whereas, most Hibiscus varieties will only live through winter in tropical climates.

This plant blooms from July to September and is approximately 3 feet wide and 3 foot tall. The flowers are a deep red, 6-10 inches wide and are attractive to butterflies.The blooms usually are short lived (1-2 days), but additional blooms are produced each day, often resulting in hundreds of blooms a year. Deadheading will also help encourage flowering. The leaves turn bright orange in the fall. After the leaves drop from the plant, it should be cut back.

This shrub is, for the most part, low maintenance and prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. It likes moist, but well-drained soils, and good fertilization is recommended. Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' can have some insect and disease issues, including Japanese beetles, aphids, leaf spots, rusts, cankers and blights, but with proper care and monitoring, these issues can usually be managed. As an added benefit, deer generally do not disturb this shrub.

Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' is a wonderful perennial for anyone in Carteret County, who would like to add something colorful to their yard.
