Growing Garlic and Winter Prep

It may be a little late to plant most vegetables this year, but it’s never too early to start thinking about what would be good in the garden next year. To start with, take a look back at what did well this year. Make a note that these varieties will likely do well again in the future, so put these on the list of what to plant for next year.

If you do want to plant something in the vegetable garden this time of the year, consider garlic as a possibility. It will grow through the winter and be ready for harvest in June or July. The garlic in the store may grow for this purpose, but you will have better luck ordering your garlic bulbs from a seed catalog.

When you are finished with the vegetable garden for the year, don’t forget to put it to bed. Clean out all the weeds and dead vegetable plants, then cover the bed with a one-inch blanket of mulch or fresh compost to keep the weeds from taking over during the winter.
