Lawn Care in Dormancy

Hopefully, the lawn has stopped growing by now and gone completely dormant.  There may be a little bit of color to the grass still, but most of it should have lost the green.

Now, while the grass is dormant and the weeds are still small, is the time to use a post emergence lawn weed control product. Before making an application or even purchasing a product, you should identify the weed that is causing the problem in the lawn. There may be two or three that need to be identified, but correctly identifying the weed is important to success because not all products control all weeds.

Once the weeds are identified select a product that is safe to use on your particular lawn type and also labeled to control the weed or weeds that are causing the issues. Make sure to read the label to find this information. Sometimes there is a publication on the back of the product that you will need to open and read to find the list of weeds. Personally, I prefer the products that can be hooked up to a hose and sprayed on the lawn.

Lastly, make the application when the temperatures are above 60 degrees and the soil is moist from either a rain or an irrigation cycle. The weeds will be actively growing at this point and most likely to be controlled.  The temperatures may drop back below 50 for a few days, but be assured, the chemical will have entered the weed and will kill it when it starts growing again.
