Spraying Winter Weeds

I sprayed my winter weeds in the lawn during the break between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. It’s not too late to spray, if you have lots of weeds in the lawn. Pick a warm day (55 or warmer) to spray so the weeds will be actively growing at those temperatures and will absorb the chemical. It may take 4 to 6 weeks for the weeds to completely die, but if you chose the correct chemical the weed will die. In my lawn, it took about 5 weeks, but they are gone now.

If you have had crabgrass in the lawn in the past couple years, now is the time to put down a pre-emergence herbicide. The earlier it is put down the better. The chemical doesn’t leach out of the soil and it doesn’t break down until the soil temperatures warms up.
