Transition to a Fall Garden

My cucumber vines, squash plants and string beans have all finished producing for the year. The squash and the cucumber were done in by insects damaging the base of the plant. The string beans have just stopped producing flowers.  With summer vegetables fading away, now is the perfect time to start transitioning to a fall garden.

I don’t know why I keep torturing myself by planting beets in the garden, other than ‘I love me some pickled beets’, but I’m going to give them another try. I’m also planting some spinach, leaf lettuce, carrots, and radishes from seed. I had really good luck with spring cabbage this year, so I’ll try those again this fall. If I have the space once all that is in, maybe I’ll plant some broccoli or some collards to fill up the garden.

The question, with the broccoli, cabbage and collards, is how do I keep the caterpillars from eating more than I get to eat. I’ll need to let you know what I decide to do and how well it works.
