I’m starting to see some of the winter weeds blooming in lawns already this year. Not all of them are blooming, but some of them are, which means it’s getting a little late to use a post-emergence herbicide on winter weeds. If you haven’t already sprayed the weeds in your turf and you are planning to, don’t wait too much longer. Once the weeds start flowering they will put the needed energy into seed production to ensure more weeds next winter.
If you plan on spraying for winter weeds, pick a day when the temperature is over 60 and the wind isn’t blowing too much to make the application. I sprayed the vetch in my lawn about three weeks ago and it’s all dead now.
If you don’t plan on spraying the weeds, here is something you can do that is creative and helps reduce weed seed for next year. Collect some of those pretty flowers. Put them between two paper towels and place them in a heavy book. Allow them to dry in the book for a couple of weeks and then take them out and use them to make some artwork such as greeting cards. Removing the flowers removes the possible seeds and I’m sure the artwork will be appreciated
