The lawn is looking mighty thin on one side of my house. There isn’t much I can do in October to thicken up the lawn, but I can think about controlling the weeds in this area as they come up. By controlling the winter weeds, it will give the lawn a better chance of coming up in the spring and filling in the gaps.

I also noticed that there is a large circle under a tree that isn’t growing well. The roots from the tree are pretty shallow in this area, so I’m going to keep a close watch on this area to see if any mushrooms appear. If the mushrooms appear, I’m going to get them identified so I’ll know if there is a problem with the tree or if they are from a fungus that is decomposing organic matter in the soil.

The front lawn is looking really good. It’s the best the lawn has looked in several years. There is a large tree in the yard that drops lots of leaves during October, so I’ll need to make sure I either rake these up and use them as mulch or run them over with the lawn mower. When the leaves are chopped fine enough they will decompose in place and return the nutrients back to the soil. Leaves left on the grass for too long will shade the lawn and possibly smother it so it won’t green back up in the spring.
