As I go on my walks through my neighborhood, I’ve noticed the lawns are growing well and I often hear the hum of lawn mowers throughout the weekend. These are sign that it's time to begin applying fertilizer to the lawn to help it grow vigorously through the summer.
Most of the grass species we grow in our lawns need to be fertilized once a month throughout the summer growing season. Centipedegrass is the one exception to that rule. It should be fertilized once now and then again in late June or early July to keep it growing throughout the summer. It’s not as heavy of a feeder as our other summer grasses.
North Carolina State University has recently updated the lawn maintenance calendars for each species of grass that we use as lawns here in North Carolina. These lawn maintenance calendars can be found on the TurfFiles website by clicking on the grasses tile in the menu on the left of the screen and selecting the grass species you have in your lawn. You can find the suggested mowing heights, fertilizer recommendations, and most anything else you might want to know.
