March Gardening List

Trees and Shrubs

  • Trees and shrubs are coming out of dormancy. Now is the time to fertilize them. Follow the soil test results recommendations. In the absence of a soil test apply 10 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of bed area.
  • Be on the lookout for insects coming out of dormancy. Look closely for crawlers of scale insects and spider mites. Treat the plants if you see these insects.
  • If an overgrown shrub needs to be rejuvenated, make sure it is one that will come back from such heavy pruning, then cut it back this month.

Fruits and Vegetables

  • Fruit trees and blueberries can be pruned up until the flowers begin to open on the plants. Muscadine grapevines can be pruned before the leaves are fully opened.
  • Spray fruit trees with dormant oil to eliminate scale insects that may have overwintered on the bark of the plant.
  • When apple and pear trees are blooming they can be sprayed with streptomycin to prevent the bacterial disease Fire Blight.
  • If you enjoy starting tomatoes, peppers and other summer crops from seed indoors, now is the time to get them started.
  • Asparagus beds can be fertilized before spear growth begins.
  • Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower can be set out in the garden around mid-March.
  • Beets, carrots, Chinese cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, Swiss chard, turnips and potatoes can be planted anytime this month.

Lawn and Landscape Care

  • Crabgrass herbicides should be applied when Forsythia blooms
  • Cautiously control cool season weeds in turf. Before applying chemicals check to make sure the lawn isn’t greening up.

Ornamental Flowers and plants

  • Start summer annuals by seed indoors.
  • Plant flowers to attract pollinators
  • Perennials like daylily and Shasta daisy can be divided at this time if the ground is dry enough.
  • Remove spent flowers from pansies and spring bulbs.
  • Fertilize emerging flower bulbs.

Other Activities

  • Mosquito season is upon us. Empty any objects that hold water.
  • Clean out gutters so water will drain, preventing mosquito habitat.
  • Clean drainage ditches and convince neighbors to do the same. Moving water is not good habitat for mosquitoes, standing water is.
