Collapse ▲Carteret County 4-H’ers participate in the State Avian Bowl Competition held in Raleigh, NC.
Avian Bowl is a team quiz event that tests participant’s knowledge on a wide range of avian topics. These topics are selected from the National 4-H Avian Bowl Manual which is published by the Clemson Cooperative Extension and vary each year. This year’s topics included Avian Systems (Circulatory, Nervous, Excretory, Muscle and Skeletal), Breeds, Varieties and Strains, Eggcyclopedia, Small Turkey Flocks, Changing World of Poultry and Egg Market, Embryology and Non-food use of eggs.
Three Carteret County 4-H’ers joined with 4-H’ers from Onslow and Greene Counties to create a Junior and Senior Avian Bowl team. Junior team members were Luna Pitko, age 9, of Carteret County, Lilliana Saunders, age 10, Julianne Bryan, age 12, both of Onslow County and Davin Tucker, age 9, of Greene County. Senior team members were Bethany Copeland, age 14, Anna McNiel, age 14, both of Carteret County, Lexi Gilkey, age 14, and Isabella Gray, age 14, both of Onslow County.
Youth were provided with a study schedule and met virtually to review what they studied, present assigned projects and answer questions. After each meeting, participants wrote 5-10 questions which were later compiled and submitted to the State competition. The State Competition was held July 18, 2023, at NC State University. The Junior team finished 2nd in that division and the Senior team finished 1st in their division.
Youth interested in joining 4-H and the Avian Bowl team should contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension – Carteret County Center by calling 2252-222-6375 or by emailing the 4-H agent.
Purpose of the Contest:
- To encourage youth to expand their knowledge of avian facts, and become proficient in poultry management, and related subjects.
- To serve as an award activity and trip for youth who have achieved superior levels of performance in a state competition and thus stimulate their learning processes, interest, and enthusiasm.
- To help youth with career guidance, and to promote the poultry industry, by stimulating their interest in poultry and other avian species.
- To make learning fun.
