Winter Weed Control and Pets

I’ve seen the winter weeds blooming in lawns as I drive by, meaning chemical lawn weed control is still possible. However, once the winter annuals start to flower, they are most likely going to set viable seeds before they die.

Make sure to follow the label directions for application of winter weed control, which include temperatures over 55 or 60 degrees, moist soil, and cover up with proper personal protective equipment including gloves and proper footwear. Not only do you want to make sure to kill the weeds, but protecting yourself and others is important as well.

While we’re on the topic of protecting others, let’s not forget our furry friends. Carefully, read the label of the product being used as many products will say on the label that it is safe for pets to go back in the area once the product has dried but some products may specify a longer length of time. It’s a good idea to read the label before making the purchase to ensure the animals have a safe place to return to after the weeds have been controlled.

Do NOT fertilize with a nitrogen fertilizer now. The grass is just getting ready to come out of dormancy, which can be compared to sleep. Most people don’t eat as soon as they wake up, so give the grass a couple more months to get fully awake and actively growing before applying any nitrogen fertilizer.
